Got Oil? Face Oil for Smooth Skin

At some point during middle school, we all face the same dreaded challenge: how to deal with your first pimple. From that time on, we spend countless dollars and hours trying to find the most effective method of sucking skin dry of its natural oil.

The worst part of this whole experience is that things don't seem to get better. Young adults get into a frustrating cycle of oily, acnaic skin that no amount of benzoyl peroxide or salicylic acid can tame. This is where oil comes in.

For years I believed the ultimate beauty sin was to use oil on my combination skin as I feared it would cause even more break outs. But after reading many testimonies by people who swore their skin improved after adding something more hydrating, I thought I would try it out. Add this post to the list of glowing reviews people have written about the healing, clarifying powers of using an oil cleanser and oil moisturizer on oily to combination skin.

Skincare gurus who tout the benefits of adding oil to your beauty regimen attribute its effectiveness to balancing out oily skin's sebum production. Using harsh, sulfate-laced (i.e. foaming) products to control oily patches actually encourages increased oil production. The oil skin produces easily fosters the growth of pore-blocking bacteria, leading to break outs. Furthermore, oils plump the skin with moisture which slows down the process of aging and clear hyper pigmentation and acne scars by promoting cell turnover.

The secret here is remembering that not all oils are created equal. Oils such as tea tree oil, neem oil and geranium oil are known for their anti-bacterial, acne fighting properties making them a good starting point for exploring the world of oils. For anti aging, look to neroli oil, patchouli oil and carrot seed oil.

The best oil I have used for breakout prone skin is Clarins' Lotus Oil, but I will list a few other suggestions of oil treatments and cleansers below:

Ashley
