I've been working my way through this long biography that came out last September about Robert Peace, a young man who leaves the slums of Newark in pursuit of an education at Yale but faces the devastating violence of his neighborhood when he returns home. The author, Jeff Hobbs, was Peace's college roommate at Yale in the 1980s and provides an in-depth glimpse into the protagonist's life based on his own relationship with Peace and information he gathered from family and friends.
The book touches on many hot social issues in America today— from race to socioeconomic status to drug culture to youth violence to sexism— as it juxtaposes the violence and poverty of Newark with the privilege and prestige of a top university.
While the book's ending is heartbreaking, it is also unforgettable.

Ashley
