Book Review: Americanah by Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie

via Amazon

I finished Americanah a couple of weeks ago and really enjoyed it. In fact, it is one of the best books I've read in a long time, which doesn't surprise me as I've read multiple glowing reviews of the novel. Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie was awarded the National Book Critics Circle Award for Fiction, and Americanah was included in NTY's 10 Best Books of the Year and NPR "Great Reads" book lists.

Americanah tells the story of Ifemelu who leaves her family and boyfriend in Nigeria in pursuit of a college scholarship. The novel follows her misadventures in hairstyles, her successful blog about cultural identity and her ever-complicated relationships with men and her own cultural and racial identities.

A few quarters ago, I took a course on contemporary American fiction, which included works by Toni Morrison, Ralph Ellison and Junot Diaz. Adichie's acclaimed novel stands up to those of lauded literary greats, and contributes to an important global dialogue about self identity.

I would absolutely recommend this to everyone— it is excellent! I've already ordered Half of a Yellow Sun.

xoxo,
Ashley
