Sophia Amoruso describes her book #GIRLBOSS saying, "[#GIRLBOSS] will not teach you how to get rich quick, break into the fashion industry, or start a business. It is not a feminist manifesto nor a memoir." What exactly this book is, however, is a bit difficult to pin down. #GIRLBOSS is a blend of Amoruso's experiences and empowering how-to guide for the modern girl to work toward the life she wants to lead.
If I could sum up the moral of the story in two words they would be: work harder.
Amoruso is no Salinger, but her no-nonsense advice and memorable one liners (see image above) are witty and insightful. While I wouldn't say I learned some life-changing piece of information from reading the book, I would say that I finished feeling inspired and with a renewed belief that my dreams are within reach. A real-life rags-to-riches story will do that to you, am I right?
Despite the book not being a work of great literary skill or a totally moving narrative (then again, what credentials do I have to judge this?), I am really glad I read it. Sometimes we all need a little push to get up and get fighting for what we want out of life. And no matter what area of your life you are working on, I guarantee you Sophia Amoruso has something to say that you need to hear.
For all of us 20-something women (or men) out there, this is a welcome change of pace from our school books and spreadsheets, and also a good read. Enjoy!
xoxo
