Since I first listened to This American Life's spinoff podcast Serial, I've become interested in learning more about the right to a fair trial in the justice system (and yes, I'm a law school hopeful). So when I stumbled upon Just Mercy: A Story of Justice and Redemption by Bryan Stevenson of the Equal Justice Initiative (EJI), I immediately knew I had to read the book. I've spent the past few days absorbed by Stevenson's story as founder of the Atlanta-based nonprofit organization EJI, which provides free legal counsel to prisoners and defendants who were denied fair trial in the legal system.  Just Mercy is a moving read— upsetting and uncomfortable in its graphic discussion of capital punishment and the US court and prison systems— which is exactly why this book so important. I am definitely a couple of years late on this but I bought my first MAC pro palette this past week and am obsessed! Specifically, I purchased the Pro Palette Large Duo with two Eyeshadow x15 Inserts. MAC Pro Palettes are slim and eliminate the need for bulky, individually packaged shadows. However, getting the shadows out of their pans (aka "de-potting") can be a little tricky. I watched this video on YouTube to help me out. Going forward, however, I plan to purchase my MAC shadows in Pro Palette refill pans— meaning they don't come with bulky packing and cost less ($10 rather than $16). Also, if you decide to de-pot, don't't forget to bring your empty shadow containers back to MAC— 6 empty plastic containers = a free lipstick of your choosing!

Middle school nerds (me), have no fear! According to a study published this month in the journal Child Development, cool kids don't always stay cool. In fact, the lead author of the study, Joseph P. Allen of the University of Virginia, concluded that the social status of "fast-track kids" peaks in middle school when they exhibit pseudo-mature behavior, and then plummets in high school and beyond. In the long term, these fast-moving middle schoolers constantly try to impress friends by upping their risky behavior, which often leads to problems with substance abuse and intimacy. In fact, Allen calls this group "socially stunted." Perhaps this means we bookworms will have our day too. Read the full article here.

Most of my friends think it is weird and boring that I eat oatmeal every single day for breakfast, so I was really happy to discover another oatmeal aficionado on the internet via The Oatmeal Artist. The artist herself is recent college grad Lauren (also an English major— truly a girl after my own heart!), who whips up delicious looking oatmeal recipes every day. Her recipe index features hundreds of classic stovetop recipes, plus a slew of baked oatmeal recipes (my absolute fave!). I love her peanut butter cookie oatmeal and often find myself baking a pyrex of chocolate pb oats for dessert (yay).

One of my best friends from high school and I used to literally spend hours mesmerized by YouTube beauty vloggers like Michelle Phan, Lisa Eldridge and the Fowler sisters so I was transported back in time when I saw this article on Refinery 29. I am super nosy about people's makeup and skincare routines so I enjoyed pouring over these mini interviews with prominent UK bloggers— they always provide the best product recommendations since they get to try out so many products free of charge! Now, I can't wait to get my hands on Charlotte Tillbury's Goddess Skin Clay Mask!

xoxo,
Ashley
