Review: The Dinner by Herman Koch

Tension is certainly on the menu in Herman Koch's acclaimed Dutch novel The Dinner, which was recently translated into English. The story takes place over a decadent meal at a posh restaurant in the Netherlands where brothers Serge and Paul, along with their wives, meet for a decadent dinner to discuss an unspeakable crime their sons have committed together. The Dinner is a tale of sibling rivalry, a work of cultural commentary and a discussion of morality artfully combined for the reader's consumption.

Flavors of anxiety and horror with a dash of darkness punctuate the novel, creating an eerie atmosphere with deep-seeded family dysfunction at its core. Koch is a masterful storyteller who has crafted both a chilling and thrilling narrative that isn't easy to swallow, but gives the reader a lot to chew on.

I recommend this book to those with an appetite for suspense!
