How To: It Girl Hair

How to achieve that shiny, swingy, sort-of-slept-in look— yeah, you know exactly what we're talking about.

The rise of it-girls like Gigi Hadid, Kendall Jenner and Alexa Chung has brought with them the resurgence of effortless style. From no makeup-makeup to purposely distressed denim, today's fashion and beauty trends are all about looking slightly undone. And nothing says it-girl quite like perfectly tousled tresses. Whether you're sporting a lob or mermaid length hair, here's how to achieve that model off-duty look.

Start with towel dried hair and a volumizing mousse— I love Bumble & bumble's Thickening Full Form Mousse. For mid-length hair, dispense an egg-sized dollop into the palm of your hand, for longer lengths, aim for the size of a tennis-ball.

Then rub the product between your hands until it is milky and work into hair, focusing on the ends and crown of your head. A lot of people use too much product on the roots of the hair, which leaves strands hanging limp. Use mousse all over so volume looks natural!

Rough dry your hair until it is almost completely dry. To get the most volume, flip your hair over and blast hair at the roots. I've been using drybar's Buttercup Blow Dryer and Lemon Drop Detangling Brush.

Finish styling with a paddle brush and blow dry clips. Smooth any front pieces or bangs and pin back into place with blow dry clips. Then go section by section with a flat paddle brush (rather than a round brush) for an undone yet polished look.

Finally, mist with hairspray and use pomade. To get extra volume, flip hair over and mist all over with hairspray— I use drybar's The Sheriff. Then tame fly aways and create piece-y texture with a pomade like Bumble & bumble's Grooming Creme. Voila!

xoxo,
Ashley
