Back to business— the seasons are changing, and your skincare routine should be too! As air gets crisper and the sun sets earlier, your skin needs to adapt to harsh winter conditions, and that's where your skincare routine comes in. This four-step routine— cleanse, treat, moisturize, SPF— will ensure your skin stays balanced and glowing during the holiday season.
In cold weather it is important to ensure cell turnover and cleared pores with a regular cleansing and exfoliating routine. A glycolic or salicylic acid cleanser such as Peter Thomas Roth's Glycolic Acid 3-Percent Facial Wash or Murad's Time Release Acne Cleanser used with a Clarisonic Mia Cleansing Brush will combat both breakouts and flaky skin. However, to prevent stripping your skin of its natural oils, switch to a nighttime-only cleansing routine (just rinse with warm water in the morning) or replace your morning cleanser with something gentle like Fresh Beauty's Soy Face Cleanser.
Skip a drying toner and use a specialized treatment instead. My pick is Kate Somerville's AntiBac Benzoyl Peroxide (La Roche Posay's Effaclar Duo is a more potent option). Another great option is a spot-clearing serum like Fresh Beauty's Peony Spot Correcting Brightening Essence. For hydration, try Caudalie's VinoPerfect Radiance Serum.
Add an eye cream (Origins' GinZing Refreshing Eye Cream is the perfect pick-me-up in the morning and evening) and a power-packed yet light moisturizer such as Kate Somerville's Goat Milk Moisturizer or Ole Henriksen's Truth Creme Vitamin C Advanced Hydration. Finally, add a high quality SPF to prevent sun spots and future wrinkles. My favorite is Kate Sommerville's Daily Deflector Waterlight Broad Spectrum 50+++ or Murad Oil-Control Mattifier SPF 15 PA++.
For extra glow, you can add an additional exfoliating treatment twice per week. Glamglow's YouthMud Tingling Exfoliating Treatment is the best I've used, but I also like Dr. Brandt's Microdermabrasion Skin Exfoliant for something a little more mild (plus the sent is AMAZING!). Follow this up with a clay mask to clear pores of impurities. I usually use Glamglow Supermud Clearing Treatment, but I think Origins' Clear Improvement Active Charcoal Mask is also great. If you need a little extra moisture, try out Origins' Drink Up Intensive Overnight Mask.
When going through your skincare routine, timing is important. Apply your serum immediately after washing your face. Professionals believe that skin starts losing moisture within three minutes of cleansing. Let the treatment soak in for a few minutes (3-5 should do) so it absorbs before you apply eye cream and then moisturizer. A good rule of thumb for skincare is to build products by consistency— the thinnest products should go on before thicker ones so they are "sealed in."
And when skin gets beyond flaky? Apply a generous amount of Neosporin on anything chapped and stinging. While it is certainly not something you should apply to your face every night, it is a great quick fix to rebalance skin and take the edge off a stinging, irritated patch.
xoxo,
Ashley
