How Often Should I...? 10 Tips for Keeping Things Clean

Germs are real. They make you sick. And in the words of the ever-wise Gretchen Rubin, outer order leads to inner calm. I often find myself, "How often should I _________?" Is my weekly sheet-washing habit actually preventing me from getting sick? How bad is it that I don't wash my makeup brushes for weeks on end (for the record, this is really bad)?

I finally did some research.

Today, I've pulled together a list of the most common things you probably don't clean as often as you should, and guidelines of when and how to keep everything neat.

1. Wash your makeup brushes as often as possible, at least once per week. Spot clean your makeup brushes after every use with an anti-bacterial daily brush cleanser and weekly with heavy duty soap and water to prevent oil and bacteria from blocking your pores.

2. Wash your jeans every 4 to 5 wears. Make sure you wash them inside out to protect against fading.

3. Clean out your purse or schoolbag every week (I like to do this on Sundays before a new school week starts!). Take everything out and then turn the bag upside down so any dirt falls out of the bag. Then, if the bag is made of synthetic material, wipe down the interior and exterior down with an anti-bacterial wipe.

4. The old adage is correct— wash your sheets and pillowcases every week. There have been so many articles circulating around the internet lately featuring gross images of the bacteria and bed bugs that live in your bed, so simply change your sheets!

5. Sterilize your computer and phone as needed by using rubbing alcohol on an old rag. Make sure your device is powered down when you do this!

6. Clean your beauty tools— including Clarisonic brush head, nail clippers, razor— once per month. To do this, you'll need isopropyl alcohol. For brush heads, mix alcohol with water and let soak for 15 minutes. For metal tools, soak a cotton pad in alcohol and wipe everything down!

7. Remove lint from the back of your blow dryer and clean hair from your hair brush once per month (you can use an old comb for this!).

8. Go through your makeup drawer every season. Make sure to dispose of mascara, face masks, nail files and loofahs after three months; all liquid cosmetics every 6 months; and all powder cosmetics every 2 years.

9. Clean your earbuds every month by wiping them down with rubbing alcohol.

10. Go over your silver jewelry with jewelry polish every season. If you don't want to use silver cleaner, you can use baking soda and water mixed together! Remember, never wash pearls or precious stones yourself!

Ashley
