Book Review: What the Dog Saw by Malcolm Gladwell

via Amazon

While I have been absolutely swamped with schoolwork lately, I have continued to make time for pleasure reading every night before I go to sleep. During the half hour it takes me to get really sleepy, I find engaging my mind with a good book helps me transition into a restful state. And most of the time, I turn to non-fiction for an interesting yet not overly stimulating to unwind.

Last week, I read Malcolm Gladwell's What the Dog Saw, a compilation of the writer's most successful essays published in the New Yorker. I'm a huge fan of Gladwell's research— I've read Outliers, The Tipping Point and am now in the middle of David and Goliath, (although shamefully, I have not gotten around to reading Blink yet), but found What the Dog Saw to be particularly engaging.

I enjoyed the concept of compiling multiple stand-alone essays that represented the best of Gladwell's work. Each essay allowed me to gain a fresh perspective about something I only knew about on the surface (example, the real story of the TV-famous "dog whisperer"). Plus, these make for perfect reading when you only have a short amount of time— I can get through each in about 20 minutes, which is perfect for before bed or when I want to take a quick break from my day.

This book is especially great for any trivia nerds out there— it is full of fun facts! Buy it on Amazon here.
