August Favorites

August has taken me all the way from my little college town in New England, back to California and on a family vacation. This has also been an important month because the last few days have been filled time spent really taking care of myself and re-investing myself in things that make me happy (aka my passions).

Academically, I found myself hitting one of my "balance lows" this month, staying up practically all night stressed and studying for a final. The worst part of my first all-nighter was that I didn't choose to stay up all night— I was so nervous about sleeping through my alarms and missing my exam that I couldn't fall asleep, so I continued to study. I managed to get a two hour nap in before and between exams, but I felt horrible and groggy all day. And while I did well on the finals, I returned home so drained that I started to re-evaluate what my priorities are, personal health being at the forefront.

My August favorites mainly come from the last few days of this month, and all have to do with my goal of taking better care of myself especially before I head off to London for the fall:

1. Reading: I read a couple of great books over the past few days— Me Before You by Jojo Moyes (review later this week!) and The Red Queen by Matt Ridley. The books are related, but fit into different genres, fiction and nonfiction. A few days ago I was thinking about how happy I feel when I'm in the middle of a good book regardless of genre (meaning, I haven't grown impatient and skipped to read the last page, a terrible quality I had until about age 12). Reading is so rewarding when I get invested in characters and the plot, and observe how things play out. I've also stumbled on some great advice when I read (aka all of Gone with The Wind).

2. Tea Time: During every break from school, I try to reset my caffeine intake to one coffee per day. Not only does caffeine help me study a little longer, but I just love the taste of coffee. I now sleep more and drink more water, and I've also added Yogi tea to my beverage list. I love the Throat Comfort the most as it soothes the sore throat I often get in the evening.

3. Fresh Beauty: I will post about this in more detail later, but I finally made a skincare switch that has me with the clearest, softest skin I can remember. I really love the Fresh Beauty's products, especially their clean smell and effective results.

4. Working Out: I have been spending some much needed time at the gym, clearing my mind and strengthening my body. I love my Nike Frees for workouts!

5. Blogging Break: I only regret not posting about taking a break, but during finals week and my first week home, I decided to stop posting in order to let my brain focus on academics and then rest.

6. Room Redecorating: My parents surprised me a redecorated my room while I was away and I absolutely love it (I'll be posting more details later). Between moving around the furniture and changing my bedding and light fixtures, I feel like I'm in a whole new room! There are still a few finishing touches to do, but I love how it's come together. And there is no better feeling than coming home to a clean and organized room!

7. September Issues: I picked up a slightly ridiculous amount of September magazines before my family vacation over the weekend. This might be my favorite year in fall fashion (ah!! PLAID!!). I will be posting a lot more about trends I'm looking forward to and pieces I've already found (Theory everything!) in preparation for my trek to one of the fashion capitals of the world— London!

Happy September!
xoxo
