My End-of-Summer Beauty Review

We are in the final weeks of summer, and the weather here in New England is starting to feel a little bit October-ish. Before I know it, I'll be home, then off in London and then back on campus for an icy winter term.

As the nights get a little cooler, my stash of makeup and skincare supplies is starting to dwindle, and I'm beginning to think about which products I'll want to repurchase for the fall. Here is a review of some products I've been using throughout the summer:

Ole Henriksen "Sheer Transformation" Oil Free Moisturizer: I received this product as a deluxe sample and have fallen in love with it. It is lightweight, hydrating and has not caused any abnormal breakouts. It is packed with Henriksen's actiwhite, licorice and vitamin C— all great for healing current blemishes, fading dark spots and anti-aging. Furthermore, fruit acids in the formula exfoliate dead cells and even out skin texture. I plan on purchasing this in full size and using it as my daily moisturizer.

Peter Thomas Roth Rose Stem Cell and Cucumber Gel Masks: I purchased these two masks as part of a trio that also included a pumping enzyme peel (side note: I loved the peel). The enzyme mask exfoliates well, but is unfortunately only sold in this set. The Rose and Cucumber masks could be great for my skin when I get older or when my skin is drier, but I think the trio as a set is better suited for someone with more mature or drier skin than mine. I will not repurchase this as I have seen no difference in my skin after using these two masks, despite how great the pumpkin enzyme is.

MAC 'Mineralize' Skinfinish in Lightscapade: My mom sent me this product in a care package back in the winter, but I didn't really start using it until the spring and into this summer. It is one of my all time favorite products! I had previously been using a very glittery Dior illuminating powder, which worked well for nighttime, but was too sparkly for daytime. MAC's 'Mineralize' Skinfinish gives me a natural glow with no chunky glitter. I will definitely repurchase this when I run out, but another benefit of the product is how long it lasts, given the large amount in the compact.

Bobbi Brown 'Perfectly Defined' Gel Eye Liner in Pitch Black: Another mom pick along with the Bobbi mascara listed below— thank you!! Before I tried this product, I was a devoted user of Bobbi's potted gel eye liner (applied with an angled liner brush). This pencil is much easier to apply, but still gives me the same precise line that I was able to achieve with the potted liner and brush. I will definitely repurchase this, and will also consider trying out a more subtle brown color- either Chocolate Truffle or Scotch.

Dior Glow Maximizer Primer: I finished yet another bottle of my favorite Make Up For Ever HD Microperfecting Primer in 0 Netural, and wanted to try something new out simply because I find that packaging of Make Up Forever primer unattractive and bulky. Plus, I don't feel that there is very much product in the package to begin with, which is pretty inconvenient. Anyway, I decided to try out this Dior product. Upon application, the primer looked amazing. I mixed it with some foundation and my skin looked luminous and evened out. However, it ended up causing me a very severe breakout. I did a little bit of research on this, and found that other users experienced the same thing. While I think the product looks amazing, the damage it caused my skin makes me doubt that I will even finish the product, which is a shame as it was a little pricey.

Laura Mercier Protect Broad Spectrum SPF Foundation Primer: Thankfully, my primer prayers were answered. In the same box I received my Dior primer in, I also selected a deluxe Laura Mercier primer sample with SPF. I love this primer. It is hydrating, but not heavy and makes my foundation last all day. I do like the product a lot, and I think the Oil Free formula would be an even better fit for my skin. I look forward to trying it out!

Algenist Complete Eye Renewal Balm: Another sample (Sephora seriously spoils their online shoppers and VIB members! Sign up here for rewards) I tried out and liked. The cream is moisturizing, and while I liked that the product was gentle on my skin, I didn't love it. I think I want something more potent for de-puffing and brightening, especially during the school year when I am pretty sleep-deprived. I am still pretty enticed by Origins' GinZing Refreshing Eye Cream, so when it's time to replace my Kiehl's Midnight Recovery Eye Concentrate (a little too intense for my skin), I will be trying that out.

Bumble and bumble Hairdresser's Invisible Oil Conditioner: I have said over and over again how Bb's Hairdresser's Invisible Oil Primer is my holy grail hair product, so I was excited to try out yet another (jeez) sample, which was the conditioner from the same line. First off, I love this product's scent. It is hands down the best-smelling hair product I have ever used, and the scent does stick around all day. I also loved how it made my hair silky smooth. Now that I've stopped dying my hair (so au natural), I am tempted to buy something that doesn't have to do with color-protecting— this Bb conditioner fits the bill!

Bobbi Brown 'Smokey Eye' Mascara: Diorshow has finally met its match. After I spent two years singing the praises of the classic Dior mascara that is every make up artist's runway staple, I found Bobbi's Smokey Eye Mascara to be a solid competitor. It combines volume and length so well, and as all things Bobbi go, this mascara looks so natural. I never get clumps of product when I use this, and it also builds easily— without flaking. It is definitely something I would consider repurchasing.

Bobbi Brown Buffing Grains For Face: The fact that this is my second jar of the product shows that I really liked it, and already repurchased it. The glass jar (which look so cute on any vanity) is filled with small crushed grains for exfoliating face, neck and chest. These grains are very gentle, and I use them on days I don't do an enzyme peel (so, about 4 days per week). How you use the grains, however, is very important. The instructions read that you can pour a small amount into your hands and mix with water or mix with your daily cleanser. In my experience, the mixing with water is not effective. However, mixing with a few drops of cleanser is a different story. You now have a scrub that you know will not irritate your skin, and that will deep-cleanse. I really like this product!
