The Weekender

Happy Friday, readers from sunny California! This is my first Weekender post in awhile, so I have a lot of favorites to share. Enjoy!
ONE // Yale x Chipotle

I read an eye catching headline "Yale's Rare-Books Library Is Saving Old Chipotle Cups" when I was perusing the Atlantic's website a couple of days ago. According to the article, Yale's library has put together a collection of American writing printed on unconventional materials including postage stamps, pencils and now, Chipotle cups! It's funny to think of future generations looking at these seemingly insignificant objects! However, I always read the "two-minute" stories on Chipotle's paper products— they're actually great and written by acclaimed authors such as Jeffrey Eugenides and Toni Morrison. So they're probably worth keeping!

Chapped lips have always been a huge pet peeve of mine. Especially in the summer, it is easy to end up with dry, cracked lips if you don't use a chapstick with SPF. However, I've found you can undo the damage from a day in the sun and soothe dry skin with Kari Gran's Lip Whip. The formula features a hydrating blend of avocado oil, calendula oil and cameila oil (all organic, of course!).

I am a longtime fan of Terry O'Reilly's "Under the Influence" marketing podcast, which featured an episode called "Selling Ugly" awhile ago. The episode detailed how companies market 'ugly' products like Crocs, Uggs and Birkenstocks. Another, perhaps less well known example, is the "Inglorious Fruits and Vegetables" campaign which began in French supermarket chain Intermarche. Supermarket executives wanted to address the huge volume of fruits and vegetables that go to waste every year because they are bruised or otherwise deformed. The produce was deemed "inglorious" and sold at discounted prices— surprisingly, the campaign was massively successful. The New York Times wrote a follow up this week about the program, describing the overwhelming demand for unattractive but inexpensive fruits and veggies.

This week I was looking to upgrade some of my wardrobe staples, namely my much worn supply of tee shirts. I wanted to finally find a tee cute enough to wear outside of the house and gym. Thankfully, I stumbled upon James Perse's crewneck shirts when I was shopping at Nordstrom. They're a perfect balance of slouchy and form fitting! Perfect for a relaxed weekend look.

I'll write a more in-depth review of this later, but I read Jon Ronson's most recent work So You've Been Publicly Shamed this week and really enjoyed it. The cheeky book describes public shaming in the modern age of the internet, and its history. While people are no longer forced into public stockades as punishment, now individuals who are accused of wrongdoings are regularly lampooned on the internet, tarnishing their reputation forever. The novel raises fascinating questions about modern-day justice and fair trial in the context of social media. But be warned, the case studies are a bit racy at times!

Ashley
