Island Time: Your Guide to Summer Swimsuit Shopping

In about a week, I'll have finished my final papers, packed my bags and will be flying to the Greek Isles for a week-long beach vacation with my family. I am so excited!

Before I headed to Italy, I made sure to pick up a couple of swimsuits for my summer vacation. While I was shopping around, it hit me that I had done the same thing every year-- gone straight for bright patterned bikinis that I felt very comfortable in.

For a second I wondered why I didn't wear solids or one pieces or something maybe a little sportier. What I realized is that swimsuit shopping (which- let's be real here- is the worst), comes down to what flatters your body most, not some kind of trend. And by this point in my life I know what flatters me.

Here's your guide to finding a cute, new swimsuit for summer!

There are two things I take into account when I look for swimsuits: skin tone and body shape. I am very fair skinned and the smallest part of my body is my waist/stomach (well, we'll see about that after 2+ months of pasta and pizza). Therefore I opt for bright two pieces.

If you have...

Fair skin: Go with something patterned in a warm or cool color. I usually like bright cobalt and reds as I think that makes the paleness look healthy and a little less sickly, but really patterns are the way to go here. If you want to wear a solid, I would recommend something darker (white on very pale sometimes looks a little weird).

Tan skin: Go for bright solids. Coral and lime are the two best colors to make someone look extra tan. If you're already at your tannest, then try something like white or a very pale pink- these will pop! In terms of patterns, stick to light pastels.

Thinner on top: Try a strapless one piece or a high waisted bikini. This flatters your stomach and shows off your best assets.

Thinner on the bottom: Try a crop top bikini (Clover Canyon just came out with some very cool pieces) or try a halter one piece (very Blair Waldorf a la Gossip Girl!).

Thinner in the middle: Go for a traditional string or tie bikini. Halter straps at the top and bows on the sides of the bottoms make this extra flattering.

I will be wearing an older Ralph Lauren bikini (similar here) and can't wait to be sitting poolside in T-8 days!
